How to plan an assignment backwards

  1. Choose the assignment type and enter the title.
  2. Enter today’s date (or when you will start) and the due date.
  3. Pick a safety buffer: how many days early you want to finish.
  4. Press Plan it. Add each step to your planner with its date.

Why plan backwards?

Most students plan forwards: “I’ll start soon.” Planning backwards from the deadline shows how little time each stage really has, which is why it is the most reliable way to avoid the all-nighter. People also tend to underestimate how long tasks take (psychologists call this the planning fallacy), so the buffer protects you from your own optimism.

FAQ

How do I plan an assignment?

Work backwards from the due date. Split the assignment into stages (understand the brief, research, outline, draft, revise, submit), give each a share of the time, and put a personal deadline two days before the real one. This tool does the dates for you.

What is the safety buffer?

The buffer is a number of days before the real deadline when you aim to be finished. If you get ill or another test appears, you still submit on time.

Which assignment types are supported?

Essays and reports, projects and presentations, lab reports, and problem sets. Each uses a different set of stages and time split.

Can I add these steps to an app?

Yes. Add each step as a task with its date in ClassTrack, and you get a reminder before each one. Tasks and reminders are free.
